Do you know how big is our daily impact in the world?

Every aspect of our lives – electricity usage, food consumption, mileage driven – contribute to carbon emissions and are a factor impacting climate change.
As we believe the first step should always be being aware: today we present you Babette Porcelijn’s – an author that inspires us – Hidden Impact calculator.

This tool, depending on your mileage travelled, your energy usage and your shopping and eating habits can help you to work out what your total impact on the earth is.

It is shocking to see our real hidden impact but we believe small acts can achieve big results.

Here you have our 7 simple steps to reduce our impact on the world.

1. WATCH YOUR DAILY ELECTRICITY USAGE

In terms of electricity, every little step helps.

Make sure you switch lights off when you leave the room, unplug your electronic devices when they are not in use, turn your heater down...

2. DRIVE LESS

Walk, take public transport, carpool, rideshare or bike to your destination when possible.

This not only reduces CO2 emissions, it also lessens traffic congestions and creates a more sustainable urban climate.

3. OFFSET YOUR TRAVEL
C02 EMISSIONS

It is estimated that the airline industry produces between 2 to 3% of all manmade CO2 emissions.

One way of changing the world is by offsetting your emissions through a flight search engine. FlyGR, for instance, uses a portion of its revenue to do this for free.

4. EAT LOW ON THE FOOD CHAIN

Like all diet changes, it might take time, but knowing that every day you avoid meat and dairy you can reduce your carbon footprint by 4kg, it might be worth a try.

6. CHOOSE ORGANIC AND LOCAL FOODS THAT ARE
IN SEASON

Transporting food from far away uses fossil fuels for fuel and for cooling to keep foods in transit from spoiling.

There is a new concept of supermarket based on proximity and always keeping a positive impact on the environment.

7. WASH YOUR CLOTHING IN COLD WATER

The enzymes in detergent are designed to clean better in cold water.

In cold water and ideally washed by hand, items perform better while you can save up to 200 liters each year.

6. SUPPORT RESPONSIBLE COMPANIES

Get informed about brands before purchasing and demand durability, transparency. and environmental responsibility.

Though these may seem like small actions to take, when something small is done by many people, massive changes occur. We believe in combining forces with the people around us so that we can be the change we want to see in the world.

So, whether you’ve done all these steps this week, or even just one or two, you have had a tangible and positive effect on the planet’s wellbeing. And for that, you should be proud. We certainly are.

Thank you.
